Under a fast-track approach, Enviro-Sciences investigated and removed buried drums from an isolated area of the site. The fast-track approach for this area fostered an early positive working relationship with the Ohio EPA.
Using investigation data and a risk-based closure approach, in-place closure was selected for the six impoundment areas as part of an Interim Action for the facility. The closure involved in-situ stabilization of approximately 110,000 yards of sludge materials and installation of a final capping system.
To reduce long term operation and maintenance and to minimize the footprint of the closed impoundment areas, sludge materials from three lagoons were consolidated into the remaining lagoons prior to capping.
The lagoons were cleaned and closed to maximize the developable area at the site. In-place closure was also completed at four on-site landfill areas which included the construction of a solid waste landfill capping system that was approved by the Ohio EPA based on a risk evaluation.
