Remediation of a Combined Petroleum and Chlorinated Solvent Plume
Location: New Jersey, USA
This 5-acre, active printing supply facility was underlain by separate and dissolved phase contaminants. Product thickness ranged from a trace to approximately one-foot, and consisted of a mixture of light end, volatile petroleum hydrocarbons and chlorinated solvents. Five active recovery wells pump to the treatment facility.
Suspended solids are filtered, metals sequestered, floating hydrocarbons removed, and the dissolved compounds removed by air stripping. The tray stripper is achieving 99.9% removal of all volatile organic compounds, eliminating the need for further treatment prior to discharge. Treated water is discharged to the local sewer authority.
The SVE system consists of ten extraction wells with high efficiency blowers. Extracted vapors and off-gases from the air stripper are treated using two thermal oxidizers.
