Construction of a Multiple Wastewater Treatment Plant
![]() |
Location: Cheriton, VA, USA
Project Description:Under a competitively bid contract, ESI won the demolition of the current undersized wastewater treatment system, which was not meeting State water discharge standards, and the construction of an expanded treatment system with 40 percent additional capacity.
The new system contained two aerobic aeration basins with baffle curtains and improved aeration heads, a chlorine contact chamber, a two-acre holding pond, and a pump station to spray treated water over an adjacent irrigation field.
The system's flexible baffle curtain design allows the two aeration basins to be operated in either parallel or in series to accommodate needed treatment and retention times under variable influent flow conditions. The new system can handle up to 80,000 gallons per day.
This system services six lift stations that handle effluent from a growing commercial district. ESI provided general contracting and construction management responsibilities on the project. While much of the plumbing, earthmoving, and electrical work were subcontracted, ESI installed system pumps and made piping connections.
The project was completed on time and on budget. Several out-of-scope change orders associated with force main connections that required extensive trenching and pipe laying were promptly executed and completed within one month of the larger project completion date. This project was completed with no OSHA lost work days or reportable accidents.
